Fire Rated Switchrooms for Flood Resilience Works

Fire Rated Switchrooms for Flood Resilience Works at Urban Utilities Oxley WTP

Retracom Transportable Buildings has just delivered a Fire Rated HV Switchroom to MPA Engineering who are the main electrical subcontractors to Monadelphous as part of flood resilience works at Urban Utilities Oxley Creek WTP (Water Treatment Plant).

The facility suffered $32 million worth of damage in the Brisbane Floods of 2011 and forced part of the plant offline. A range of flood proofing measures are being rolled out including raising electrical equipment, such as switchboards, 30cm higher than the 2011 flood peak.

Industrial and residential growth in the area also dictated a capacity increase from 53 million to 65 million litres of sewage a day.

The HV switchroom measured 15.5x5.5x3.9m externally and because it was specified with a (2 hour FRL) or 120/120/120 fire rating level the building was constructed using flameguard sandwich panel in combination with various other fire certified elements. The total building tare weight was nearing 22 tons and it will be fitted out insitu with approximately 8-9 tons of switch gear and control equipment by MPA over coming weeks. Retracom had also previously supplied a smaller modular fire rated digestor switchroom.

  6. Retracom Transportable Buildings has delivered a Fire Rated HV Switchroom to MPA Engineering, the main electrical subcontractors to Monadelphous, as part of essential flood resilience upgrades at the Urban Utilities Oxley Creek Water Treatment Plant. The facility previously suffered around $32 million in damage during the Brisbane floods of 2011, which led to parts of the plant being taken offline, prompting significant infrastructure improvements. As part of the resilience strategy, critical electrical equipment such as switchboards is being raised 30 cm above the previous flood peak level to reduce future risk, while increased demand in the region has also required a capacity expansion from 53 million to 65 million litres of sewage per day. The newly delivered HV switchroom, measuring 15.5 x 5.5 x 3.9 metres externally, was built to a 2-hour fire resistance level (120/120/120 FRL) using flameguard sandwich panels and other certified fire-rated materials, resulting in a total tare weight of nearly 22 tons, with an additional 8–9 tons of electrical switchgear to be installed on-site. Projects like this highlight the importance of engineered infrastructure solutions, and students studying similar technical topics often look for support tools such as make my assignment to better understand complex industrial case studies and reporting requirements.
